How I Became a Work-at-home Dad

You may not think being a work-at-home dad is for you, but let me tell you my story. I did not think I would become a work-at-home dad either, but it turned out to be the best decision I could have possibly made for both my family and me.

The workforce, as we all know, is not a kind place sometimes. I have a college degree and went to work with the best of intentions to build a nest egg for my family. But as we all know, today’s economy is tough, and finding a job that meets the financial stability everyone needs is hard. It is also hard to find a job that is really stimulating, interesting, and gives you a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment at the end of the day.

Sometimes life throws you a curve ball, and in my case, it sure was a big curve ball. My mother became ill and came to live with us in our home. I took time off work to help her and care for her during her illness. When she passed away, my kids were devastated. I realized then that they needed my help and support to get through the loss of their grandmother. I also realized that I didn’t want to leave them and go back to a traditional job in a workplace away from home. I liked being their dad on a more day-to-day, hour-by-hour basis, and I liked being deeply involved in their lives. I didn’t want to go back to seeing them only early in the morning and late at night when they were in bed. I enjoyed my time with them and realized that there was no office I’d feel as fulfilled in as I felt at home with my kids.

It was time to start over. I needed to figure out a way that I could bring in a paycheck and contribute to our financial stability as a family, while still spending time at home with my kids. I needed to find flexibility within the workplace. Where better to find the flexibility you need in a workplace than at home.

There are many ways to create your work-at-home business. The key is to determine your own destiny. Nobody else is going to hand you the keys and tell you what to do or how to do it. Once you’ve decided you want to be a work-at-home dad, you have to create your own opportunities because you now are your own boss. You are solely responsible for your own success or your own failure. For me, failure was not an option.

I’m happy with my decision to be a work-at-home dad. It has allowed me the ability to make a living and add financial stability to my family while still spending time with my kids. Being a work-at-home dad is not for everyone, but for me it has been a great way to spend time with my kids while still providing financial support to my family.
